GameCraft II, Done :D

It might have started a bit later than intended at 09:30, but we wrapped up in time with the breaking out of the beer to celebrate a fantastic day. The day was full of excitement, ideas, lots of sugary drinks and coffee (although I did notice fresh fruit sustenance).

After tools were downed, and stickers were distributed for those to vote for their People’s Choice awards (gold star stickers for judges), and everybody got a chance to play the games after 12 hours of blood, sweat and tears.

And here are the winners:-

  • 1st Place: Turbo Duck
  • 2nd: Feast fit for a Queen
  • 3rd: Where’s your burd at?
  • Best Art Category: Rocket Dead Game
  • Best Gameplay: A tale of love
  • Best Technology: Agile Guy
  • Best MMO by DublinJS
  • Judges Choice: Wild life on one
  • Best Story: Professor Bluebird’s Time-Travelling Adventures
  • Best Humour: Donkeypocalypse
  • People’s Choice: Flama Games with Tweety

Here’s some of the games I found via tweets that you can either download and play, or just play:

If you have links to your games, video of the games or even screenshots of the games , feel free to add it in the comments below and share with everyone.

So well done to everyone again, now remember to help us pick a day for GameCraft 3, it will be held in Tipperary alongside Games Fleadh - http://t.co/nSp1wzyf

From the (GameCraft) judges with love

At 9am you start coding and you stop at 9pm sharp. Then (at least) one of you team should be on hand to problem-solve and guide the judges as we go around individually and play them. We hope to get to all your games, but will endeavour to get at least three of us to play every game.

We’ll judge your game on the criteria listed below, score it out of 50 and then reconvene to discuss and average our scores to give your game its final result.

We aim to have this done by 11pm, when we will announce the top three games and any honourable mentions before giving out prizes and whatnot.

Judges notes and game scores will not be released.

CRITERIA

Your game will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Gameplay (mechanics, design, etc)
  • Art (graphics, audio)
  • Technology (programming, platforms, technical innovation)
  • Idea (a measure of how well you implement the theme, story, that kinda stuff)
  • How complete the game you make is (a fully functional game and polish such as menus, start screens, cut-scenes, etc )

Theme selection for Dublin GameCraft II

On that morning, the judges will pick and display two images; one being a colour and the other being a thing. You can interpret these two images as you want and go from there.
So, for example, if we showed the colour blue and a picture of an elephant, you could make a game about a sad elephant or a game about the sorrow of the ivory trade or even a game featuring a blue spacecraft called ‘Elephant’.

We also urge you to include a twist element in your game. So if it is a story-based game then include a narrative twist, or maybe reverse the reward mechanisms or make an unusual pairing of setting and game mechanic. We don’t know; surprise us.
